By engaging landscapes, which reside at the center of our culture and at the periphery of our cultural vision, we are forced to reconcile the distances between us and them, past and present, human and nonhuman, city and wilderness, sacred and profane, for each is tied up in the other in the mirror of these places and the reflection of our selves.
